Malwarebytes launches scam number check for consumers

Wed, 10th Jun 2026 (Today)

Malwarebytes has launched Scam Number Check, a free reverse phone lookup tool designed to help consumers identify whether a phone number may be linked to scam activity.

The standalone web service does not require users to sign in. It checks phone numbers against Malwarebytes' threat intelligence data, carrier information, scam indicators, and reports tied to malicious campaigns.

The launch comes as scam calls and texts remain a common route for fraud. Malwarebytes cited FBI Internet Crime Complaint Centre figures showing scammers stole more than $21 billion from Americans last year.

Rather than identifying a number's owner, the service is designed to show whether a number appears safe. It also shows whether other people have flagged suspicious activity linked to the same number and lets users submit their own reports.

Users can add details about the type of call or message involved, including robocalls, fraud, and delivery scams. The service also provides guidance to help people recognise and avoid common scams.

Consumer focus

Phone-call-assisted social engineering ranks among the top five scam types tracked by Malwarebytes' Scam Guard data. The category includes cases in which a call or text appears to come from a legitimate number but is used for fraudulent purposes.

A basic check of whether a number appears legitimate, or whether other people in the same area have reported it, can help consumers decide whether to engage. The reporting feature is also intended to build a broader pool of community information around suspicious numbers.

"Most people don't have an IT department, a CISO, or formal security training, but they're still expected to navigate increasingly sophisticated scams," said Michael Sherwood, Vice President of Product at Malwarebytes.

"We need to give people simple, effective tools to fight back. Scam Number Check offers a fast, trusted way to verify a phone number and make an informed decision. It also enables people to help others in their community by reporting scam and fraud calls, making everyone safer," Sherwood said.

Broader tools

Scam Number Check joins a wider set of free consumer tools from Malwarebytes. These include products for malware scanning and removal, browser-based blocking of scams and trackers, checks for whether personal information has appeared in a data breach, and tools focused on removing personal data from broker lists and search sites.

Malwarebytes also offers Scam Guard, a service that checks suspicious texts, links, direct messages, and other messages. With Scam Number Check, the company is extending that approach to one of the oldest forms of digital fraud: unsolicited phone calls and text messages.

The emphasis on phone number verification reflects a shift in how security companies present consumer protection products. Instead of focusing on ownership records, Malwarebytes frames the question in terms of risk and reported abuse while keeping the tool open to anyone without registration.

That approach may appeal to users who want a quick judgment on whether to answer, reply, or call back. It also combines community reporting with automated analysis, using both company data and user submissions to assess suspicious numbers.

The system draws on millions of examples in Malwarebytes' database to surface relevant insights. It is intended to help people decide whether to hang up, ignore a message, or report the number for others to see.
